Tack så mycket

Did I ever tell you I lived in Sweden?  I studied abroad during college and decided that I wanted to go to Sweden because it's one of the safest countries on earth and because I knew I'd fit in with the rest of the blonde hair / blue eyed people.  I also wanted to one day be able to tell my kids about my adventures abroad.

I lived there during the coldest, darkest part of the year -- January through June.  You see, because Sweden is so far north, it gets only a few hours of sunlight every day during the Winter.  It was very cold and a shock to this Texas girl!  During the summers though, Sweden gets almost 24 hours of sunlight a day!  It's incredibly beautiful.

I found this blog today, My Scandinavian Retreat, and I am really wanting to go back...during the summer of course.  What about next summer Honey?  Maybe this is where I get my "white, clean, simple, organized" home design from.

Darling, can we have a summer home in Sweden?  It's so enchanting!  Oh, okay, if not, then let's compromise.  Can I PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE continue on my white streak?  White is so calming...

PS- Tack så mycket means "Thank You" in Swedish!

The Calm

Hello Sweet Friends- welcome to the weekend!  What are your plans?

We are keeping my little sisters this weekend--for the whole weekend.  I just keep thinking right now is "the calm before the storm".  We are going to a pool party, making cake balls, playing with the pups, going to Turbo Kick (and the kids' area at the gym), and going to the movies.  We might even have brunch on our patio since the girls will be waking us up extra early.

Here are some images to calm you into the weekend.....

Fit for a Princess

H.R.H Princhess Cathrine wore these shoes (but in black) the morning after her wedding.
I so wish L.K.Bennett didn't charge 45 euros to ship them to the states....

An Open Letter to AT&T

Dear AT&T,

You are abominable, atrocious, abhorrent, and awful.  Your connection service is despicable, your billing department is detestable, and most importantly, your customer service is disgusting.

My favorite part about calling you every month is that I am able to express my displeasure with your service over and over again because non of your employees knows which department to correctly transfer me to.

My second favorite part about calling you is that it seems like no one is taking notes of my issues.  Every month, you guys act like it's the first time you've ever heard from me.

And finally, my MOST favorite part about calling you from my cell phone (service provided by AT&T) is that after I FINALLY get to the right department (after a good 45 minutes), my call is DROPPED.  Sweet!

CAN YOU HEAR ME NOW?

Fondly,
Amelia

PS- I got that card in the mail yesterday that looked like a "birthday card" but was really a "Thank You" card for being a loyal customer and then offered me 25% off products in-store.  That's just adding insult to injury.  I ripped up your stupid fake birthday card and threw it away.

TAKE.  THAT.

Baby's Breath

This past weekend, my little sisters came along with my husband and I to Sam's to pick up dog food.  The 7 yr old thought it was so funny that "we came all the way to Sam's just for some dog food."  I guess when they go with my dad and step mom, they really stock up.

As we were about to check out, the Hubs said to my sisters "Go pick out some flowers for my wife."  So, naturally, we all ran over to the floral department to start weeding through the bouquets.  When I picked up a bunch of baby's breath, the 7 yr old said "Nah, don't get those.  You can buy those anywhere or go pick them outside for free."  The sisters picked out a beautiful summer bouquet for me instead.

I am quite fond of the simplicity of baby's breath though.....

Can't Wait: #5

We fly in to this enchanting city.  Because we've all been here before, we probably won't spend much time here; we will continue on our journey to discover all of the amazing things this country has to offer!

Well, that's a wrap!  Come back tomorrow and I'll reveal all the places I can't wait to see!  That reminds me, with all of the delicious food coming my way, I'd better get to the gym!

Can't Wait: #4

I can't wait to make a quick pit-stop here:

Okay, now you guys must know where we'll be!

Perfect Gift!

I find myself always taking wine to friends as gifts when I visit them in their homes!  What a perfect way to wrap it rather than buying an ugly wine bag!

Can't Hardly Wait: #3

My FIL & MIL are renting a (house) in a small town outside of this place to be our "home base" while we are exploring different cities.

I am very excited about going back to this city.  I think it's one of the most romantic places on earth.  My husband and I have talked dreamed about moving here one day when we are older.

I hope our home base looks as charming as this one....

Convo between a Brother and Sister

So, I think you all know that I work for 7-Eleven (chain of convenience stores around the world) at Corporate Headquarters.  My brother emailed me a link this morning and here's how our email exchange went:

Brother: This didn't happen at one of your stores did it??  http://youtu.be/JJKWiy_Wh_0

Me:  So, I can't view YouTube posts on my work computer, but I think it could be about a string of robbers breaking into convenience stores and stealing cigarettes.  You would be surprised how often this happens to stores!  At 7-Eleven, cashiers are required to insert $20 and up into a safe as soon as they receive them, so there is really never much cash in the register.  Thieves have caught on to this and now just want cigarettes because cartons of them are our move valuable inventory!  Fools jump the counter and load up cartons into trash bags---it's crazy!

BrotherNo… It’s a guy robbing an Exxon while wearing a dress, but with mens whitey tighties on his head…

Can't Wait: #2

We are also going here:

Can you guess this place?  Hint-- you might have seen images of this place in the news over the last few years.....

PS- I will tell you all of the locations at the end of the series!  (I have a really hard time keeping a secret, so this is challenging for me.  But, I started with the most obscure places first---the latter posts will give it away.)

WOW WOW WOW

Can't Wait!

Over the next few days, I'll be sharing plans for an upcoming vacation.  My FIL & MIL (father and mother in law) are taking my SIL & BIL (sister and brother in law) and my husband and I on a Family trip.

So excited to be heading here...I can hardly contain myself!

Can you guess where I'm going?

Tootie Pie Co

This past Christmas, I received an apple pie from the CEO of one of SunTx's portfolio companies, Carolina Beverage Group.  I loved working with this company and am quite sad I don't see them anymore (since I moved to 7-Eleven.)  But, back to the pie!

A few of my office mates and I were just talking about pies and I remembered how delicious the apple pie from Tootie Pie Co was.

YUM!
If you'd like, you can go here to order me one

**Blog Interruption***
I just found out they are opening a store at the corner of Royal and Preston here in Dallas.  Sooooooo excited!

More Wall Decor

What a weird coincidence!  Yesterday, I blogged about needing more artwork for my wall, and today, in pops an email from West Elm about a new collaboration they have with 20x200.com

20x200 is an online store that brings artists and buyers together...Oh the magic of the World Wide Web!  They introduce at least two new editions a week: one photo and one work on paper. Most are available in three or four sizes and start at a low price of $20!  I have already found several that I love---I just wish I'd found this place sooner since they only have a limited amount for sale and the ones I love are sold out!

Oh well, here's to wishing these were still available...

Wall Decor: Thanks Etsy!

I'm so excited-- I just received my first Etsy.com purchase in the mail!  I ordered these 2 prints from Thebigharumph!

I want to collect several more prints and wall decor to cluster together on the wall above our settee.  I wanted to bring in more orange (to my mainly white and grey-blue house) and since the Hubby and I ride our bikes quite often, I thought he'd like this as much as I do!

Also, one of my ALL-TIME FAVORITE movies is The Princess Bride

If you've seen it, you know that Princess Buttercup (prior to her becoming a princess) ordered around a stable-boy from her childhood.  Through all the years of him working for her family and Buttercup bossing him around, all he ever said to her was "As you wish."  Years go by and the stableboy is killed.  That day, Buttercup was amazed to discover that when he was saying "As you wish", what he meant was, "I love you."  Heartbroken Buttercup continues her life realizing she'll never love anyone as much ever again.

Along comes the nasty, evil Prince Humperdink who is forcing her to marry him.  She runs off and is caught by some traveling gypsys prior to the wedding.  While being carted around by these gypsys, the DREADED Pirate Roberts snatches Princess Buttercup.  She is able to free herself from him and pushes him down a huge cliff, and as he falls, he yells out "As....You....Wish....".  Yes, friends, Pirate Roberts is, in fact, the stable boy, who is alive!
Hottie, the Dreaded Pirate Roberts

If you haven't seen the movie, you MUST!  It's hilarious and full of 1 liners that you hear more often than you think.  Ever heard someone say:

"Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die."
or
"INCONCEIVABLE."  ????

Go to this fun website to get the downlow on The Princess Bride

My sweet husband, As you wish.

I'd love to hear what your favorite movies / movie quotes are!  Do share!

Kitchen Makeover: Inspiration

Lately, the hub-ster and I have been talking more and more about our future kitchen.  While we have several ideas we like to toss around, we have made 1 executive decision.

We are going to knock out the window in the kitchen and install french doors.  You see, we have 2 hunting dogs and our back door swings open directly to the living room.  I have canvas colored furniture--and expensive furniture at that--and they love to run as fast as they can into the house and plow right into the cushy sofa.  SO.OVER.IT! Our solution is to add french doors in the kitchen so that we can "enclose" them in one space---one where they can't leave beautiful paw prints on expensive furniture.

Here's a picture of the window:

And here is the inspiration for them:

While I'm looking at it, maybe moving the dishwasher to wear the fridge is (like in the picture above) is a clever idea!  We need to find a new home for the fridge anyway because I don't like that it's right up against that wall.  I feel like I can never fully open the freezer door.

Actually, I love a lot of things about this kitchen!  I love the cabinent colors (darker for the bottom and white for the uppers).  I also want a center island, and I love the wood top of the the kitchen island pictured above.  I'd probably still go with the school house lights -- something like this --instead of what is pictured above.  I feel like those are too heavy.

Honey--can you hear me?

Hutch Makeover: The Final Product

Okay, I know I promised you a long time ago to show you the outcome of our Hutch Makeover. (For part 1 of "Operation Make Over My Hutch", click here!  Well, I'm ready for the BIG reveal.

If you remember, here's what the hutch looked like when we bought it (off of craigslist for $110)
And, here are the after pics!

After we sanded and primed the hutch, we chose to paint it a cool "Mickey's Shadow" color in Behr's Semi-gloss Oil Based paint.  (Yes, from Behr's Disney Line--don't judget).  Also, we painted the inside of the hutch an oil based Onxy Black...the same paint I used for our Mirror Makeover!  As I've said before, I like to use oil-based paints on furniture because it rolls on really even.  It also doesn't leave stroke marks like Latex-based paints leave.

My husband wanted to add a mirror to the back board, so we bought a mirror from Home Depot and he cut it himself.  Well, as we were laying it in to glue it to the back board, your's truely broke the mirror.  So, angry husband went back to store to get another mirror.  On 2nd attempt to cut it, the mirror broke again.  (This time, not my fault.)  After yet another failed attempt, husband gave in and called a glass company to custom cut a mirror to fit.  Third time's a charm!

We also wanted to change out the hardware, so I ordered these cool pulls online.  Check out the above pictures for a look at the drawer pulls as well.

So, in total, we spent:
Hutch:               $110
Disney Paint:     $25
Onxy Paint:       $4  (Really it was $8 but since we used it for 2 things, I halved it!)
Primer:              $0  (Already owned from kitchen painting project)
Mirror #1:         $6
Mirror #2:         $0   (We took it back and got our $$$ back)
Mirror #3:         $25
Hardware:        $44  (Not the cheapest, but it was worth the splurge for 4 ring pulls and 5 drawer pulls)
Hardware:        -$2   (We sold the original hardware at a garage sale for cheap)
Total:              $212

I think we did pretty good considering a brand new hutch would be upwards of $500.

So, before meets after:

Secrets to Eating Well on a Strict Diet

I have been on a strict diet for about a year now--not by choice, but by necessity.  I started having awful migraines that produced stroke-like symptoms (loss of feeling on the left side of my body, loss of eyesight, inability to speak correctly) and required me to go to the hospital a few times.  My neurologist gave me medication to take "when I felt one coming on", but for 2 days after I took the medicine, I had the worst hang over..ever.  (I don't really take medication except for a few Advil every now and then, so I am very sensitive to any type of medication.)

I decided that I couldn't live my life in anticipation of a migraine coming on and that I didn't want to have to take medication daily.  My aunt told me that she too had experienced migraines like mine when she was my age and that she stopped them by eliminating several things from her diet.  She told me about a book, The Yeast Syndrome, and how following the guidelines of this book/diet changed her life.  She hasn't had a migraine since!  I was so miserable from these constant migraines that I got the book and immediately changed my diet.

I had to give up all foods that contain yeast, caffeine, sugar or that grow with mold, which is a lot of food!  No more bread, beer, grapes, peanuts, peanut butter, anything with flour, mushrooms, cold cuts, candy, cookies, cheese--(I can have mozzarella), yogurt, etc.  Basically, I have to live my life Gluten Free.  At first it was really hard, but over time, I've learned what I can substitue and in the process, I've found wonderful new foods!  I'm happy to report that I have been migraine free since I've started the diet (except for 1 time when I cheated and boy, did I learn my lesson.)

As I learn new recipes with "weird" ingredients (that my husband won't eat often times), I'll share them with you.  I not only have gotten ride of my migraines, but I've learned that eating the right foods really do make you feel better.  I now see how "toxic" foods (i.e. processed foods full of ) really do effect all of us!

Last night, I tried a new lentil soup recipe, found at one of my favorite blogs, Full House, and enjoyed it so much that I can't NOT share it!

Lentil Soup

1 large onion, finely chopped
2 garlic cloves, crushed
3 carrots, peeled and diced
1/2 dried quinoa
1 1/2 cups dried red or brown lentils  (I used Red)
4-5ish cups vegetable stock
1 bunch baby spinach, chopped
1 lemon juiced
finely grated lemon zest to taste
salt and pepper to taste

Heat oil in a large saucepan over medium heat. Add onion and garlic. Cook for 3 to 4 minutes, or until soft. Add carrots and sauté for another 3 minutes. Add lentils, quinoa and stock. Bring to the boil.

Reduce heat to medium-low. Simmer, covered, for 25 minutes or until lentils are tender. Remove from heat. Add spinach, lemon juice, and salt and pepper. Stir until well combined. Ladle into bowls. Top with lemon zest. Serves 6ish.

Not only is this healthy, but it is also super delicious!  Try it out and let me know what you think!

Vegas Party Gods - Sneak Peak

Just wanted to give you all a little tease of what went down at the Krablin Estate this past Saturday.  I'll be posting a play-by-play once I get all of my pictures uploaded.
